Citation: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William Sandford (ASN: 104280), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 369th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 93d Division, A.E.F., near the Rippont River, Champagne, France, 26 September 1918. Under direct and close-range fire of several enemy machine guns Private Sandford crawled to exposed positions to dress the wounds of officers and men.
