Distinguished Service Cross

Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Herman Macarovsky, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Blanc Mont Ridge, France, October 3, 1918. All of his superior officers killed or wounded, Sergeant Macarovsky took command of and organized his company under heavy shell fire. He then led it to the attack, captured or killed many Germans, and put several machine-gun nests out of action.
