Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Abe Kauffman, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at during the enemy counterattack on Cantigny, France, May 28, 1918. Private Kauffman refused to leave his gun after he had lost a finger during the enemy, but continued to perform his duties until so severely wounded as to be unable to assist in serving his piece.
