Distinguished Service Cross: Posthumousy awarded 6 December 1918

Citation: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Andy McCall (ASN: 1403221), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 370th Infantry Regiment, 93d Division, A.E.F., near Ferme de la Riviere, France, 30 September 1918. Although relieved on the previous night, Private McCall willingly agreed to substitute for a sick comrade, returning the following day to his dangerous post as advance machine-gunner. During a heavy shelling of his position Private McCall was killed.

Andy McCall was born to Sam (1857-?) and Sylvia (Minor) (1869-1922) on 4 January, 1897 in Houston, Texas, the fifth of seven children; Hallie (1883-1971), Daisy (1890-?), Gertrude (1892-1964), Effie (1894-1937), Isom (1899-1985), and Soja (1920-?). Andy’s brother, Isom, also served as a Private in Co. K, 370th Infantry Regiment, 93rd Division, A.E.F.

Andy enlisted in the United States Army on 26 November, 1917; Private McCall and his company left Newport News, Virginia on the U.S. Army Transport Ship President Grant on 7 April, 1918, arriving in Brest, France on 13 April, 1918. Private McCall received the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously for his actions on 30 September, 1918, near Ferme de la Riviere, France;

Private McCall was killed in action on 4 October, 1918. In October of 1920, his remains were disinterred from the American Cemetery in France to be reburied in Houston, Texas.
