Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Samuel D. Grobtuck, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Ville Savoye, France, August 21, 1918. While carrying a message to his battalion commander asking for reinforcements, Private Grobtuck passed through the village of Ville Savoye filled with mustard gas, and was killed by shell fire while crossing an open field under direct observation of the enemy.
